The site is located in a quiet residential area in Tokyo.
There is an old house on a large site of about 80 tsubo (about 1,860 square meters), which was subdivided into lots and reconstructed.
The owner is a car enthusiast and wanted a garage that could be viewed from the living room.
Because of the long east-west shape of the site, a courtyard was placed in the center, the building was divided into two parts on the west and east sides, and the living room was placed in the center of the courtyard.
The half-floor structure is composed of a dining room and kitchen on both sides, and a master bedroom on the second floor.
The parent family wanted a two-family house, so a bedroom was placed in the basement and a living room on the first floor facing the courtyard, creating a layout that allows the two households to feel each other’s presence even if they are not directly visible to each other.
Since the wife works in the interior design field, a variety of materials are used.
Vintage wooden doors are also used as accents, creating a comfortable space where the interior with its unique world view and the nature of the courtyard fuse together.
